Scientific perspective: the butterfly effect
The short story “A Sound of Thunder” can be analyzed in the light of the ‘butterfly effect’ concept. In the extra material in Wider Contexts (p. 4), the butterfly effect is explained. It is, in fact, a theory which describes “how tiny variations can affect giant systems and complex systems” (p. 4). Initially used in a meteorological context (mathematician Edward Norton Lorenz explored the way in which the wing movements of seagulls could influence wind and weather), the concept soon spread and began to be used extensively.
