Analysis

An analysis of the short story “A Serious Talk” by Raymond Carver shows that the text has a chronological structure, although it also presents a flashback. The narrative can be structured in two parts: the first part presents Burt’s visit on Christmas Day, while the second part shows Burt’s visit the day after Christmas.

The main characters of the story are Burt and Vera, an estranged couple. The story hints at an ongoing conflict between the two characters, which Burt seems unable to accept.

The physical setting is the US. The events take place in an unnamed town, on Christmas Day and on the day after Christmas. The story focuses on Vera’s house, where she and Burt have a fight. The social setting explores the relationship dynamics of a separated couple.

The story is told by a third-person narrator, who presents Burt’s perspective of the events.

The language used in the story is neutral and minimalist. The author also uses colloquial expressions, which give the dialogue a natural feel.
