Background information
The British Empire was composed of all the territories ruled by the United Kingdom. At the peak of its power – in the 19th century – the British Empire was the largest empire in history and a global leader, as suggested by Niall Ferguson’s excerpt from the book Empire: How Britain Made the Modern World. In the late 16th century, the United Kingdom started the foundation of the British Empire by claiming colonies and territories, which later functioned under the common law of England. As a result of this expansion, the United Kingdom had territories in Africa, Australia, North America, and even the West Indies.
