Social setting

The social setting explores cultural differences and immigrant life.

The narrator mentions that she and her family “were invited to get-togethers at the homes of other Lao refugees” (ll.17-18). These gatherings represent a way to connect with people from the same culture, who also have the same values. It is also a place where people from Laos can hear news about each other. However, everyone apart from the narrator’s mother at the gatherings seems to be trying to adapt to their new country. For example, a woman tells the mother to speak English to the narrator and stop teaching her Lao (ll. 40-41).

The narrator’s mother probably realizes that she cannot keep all aspects of her home culture in her new country. For example, she complains about the traditional Lao food not having the same taste as back home because ingredients are missing (ll. 34-35). There are also no Lao restaurants in America where the mother and her husband can go (ll. 16-17) which probably makes the mother feel even more disconnected. The mother and the narrator are brought close together because they have to adapt to a new culture that is different from their own . However, the narrator succeeds in adapting to the Western country, while her mother still struggles. This is because the narrator is exposed to Western culture from a young age and can absorb it more easily. The mother’s only exposure to Western culture seems to be the soap operas, which leads her to have a mistaken, dramatic view of Western life.
