Driverless Cars | HTX Engelsk B maj 2016

This study guide will help you focus on the topic of driverless cars. We will show you examples from two texts that cover the topic and focus on the most significant elements that will be relevant for a discussion about driverless cars. In these notes, we will focus on outlines, the benefits and downsides of driverless cars, and help you comment on a quotation from one of the texts.

Presentation of the topic

Driverless cars are autonomous vehicles that are equipped to sense and process the environment so that they can navigate by themselves, without the help of the driver. These cars are still only in the experimental phase, unavailable for commercial purposes. Automakers intend to release them on the market in the next few years. It is estimated that in about 30 years most of the car fleet will be composed of driverless cars.

Self-driving cars are also an issue of debate. On the one hand, they are said to have the potential to increase traffic safety and reduce the number of traffic accidents. On the other hand, because the cars need to be connected to a network to work, their use raises issues related to cybersecurity—they can be hacked, or be affected by malware, leading to errors, etc.
