Beginning

In the beginning of “Crossing”, we are still within the safety of civilization as we hear about the father and son driving out of the city and how the man picked up his son at the house he used to share with the boy’s mother. When they cross the river in the woods, it marks a change of setting in the story, but also how the man is moving into a transformation process of trying to be a better father.

Middle

The middle part of the story roughly spans the initial crossing of the river and the stay in the old barn. Ending

As the man and the boy take on the second crossing of the river, we move from middle to end in the short story. When the father almost falls, and he and his son become trapped in a tricky place in the river, the story reaches its climax, and tension is at its highest.
