The theme of guilt is also explored in the short story “The Man I Killed” by Tim O’Brien. In the story, Tim, the main character, is unable to cope with killing a man during war. Tim stares at the man’s body and imagines what the man’s life could have been like. In Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter the two main characters Silas and Larry also struggle with their guilt. Silas feels guilty for how he acted when he was young, while Larry feels guilty for not having stopped Wallace from murdering Tina. When comparing the two stories, it could also be useful to look at the ways Wallace and Tim react to killing someone, and explore whether they appear to show remorse.
