Roy French

Another character worth mentioning from the novel Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter by Tom Franklin is Roy French. He is a veteran in his late 50s who is the Chief Investigator of the county. He is a competent investigator, but when dealing with Larry’s case, he shows he is biased and attempts to pressure Larry into confessing a crime he did not commit. He believes Larry murdered Cindy Walker, despite the lack of evidence to prove this, and this bias influences the way he treats Larry during the investigation into Tina Rutherford’s disappearance. When he questions Larry, he creates a narrative where Larry murdered the two women and then shot himself because of the guilt and tries to get Larry to confess to this.
