Beginning

The short story begins unconventionally, with the main character’s reflections on her situation:

Middle

The middle of the story contains the rising action, which is marked by several episodes that include tension and conflicts. For example, tension appears when Mark calls Rita: “But Mark seemed agitated and rushed his words” (p. 1, l. 21). He tells Rita that his mother does not approve of her because she is not Catholic. However, the real reason she is rejected by the mother is because she is Indian. Mark confirms this in a tense conversation with Rita (p. 2, ll. 2-5).  This develops …

Ending

The climax takes place towards the ending of the story, as Rita’s parents come unannounced to her house.

‘Oh my God!’ I cried. ‘Fuck! Fuck!’
‘What?’ Mark jolted upright in bed.
‘Rita! Open the door!’ cried my mother… (p. 11, ll. 6-8)
