Characters

The most important character in the short story “Chameleon” by Ranbir Sahota is Rita. However, the story includes several other secondary characters that help show relationships and build conflicts, including Rita’s parents, her boyfriend Mark, and Sanjay and Sunil Methi. Rita’s sister and brother are also mentioned, along with Sunil’s sister and parents, and Mark’s mother.

Rita Patel is the main character of the short story, and the events are seen through her eyes. She is a complex character who develops as a result of the action. Her characterization is constructed both directly and indirectly, through her thoughts, actions, and relationships. All the other characters are seen through her perspective. Rita is defined by her inner conflict surrounding her two cultures, as she is torn between the traditional lifestyle that her Indian parents wish her to adopt, and the more modern, British lifestyle she leads with her white boyfriend, Mark.
