Summary

The short story “Celia Behind Me” by Isabel Huggan begins with the narrator, Elizabeth, talking about Celia, a diabetic girl she knew when she was a child. Elizabeth appears to dislike Celia. Elizabeth’s mother warns her to be nice to Celia, because she will die soon, but Elizabeth finds this unfair. 

When walking home from school, Celia is unable to keep up with the other children because she is short and always overdressed. At the playground, she does not take part in the games because she is not good at them. The other children, including Elizabeth, tease her and are mean to her. 

Elizabeth’s mother threatens to beat Elizabeth if she sees anyone throwing snowballs at Celia, so Elizabeth tells the other children to stop. Elizabeth knows she is next in line to be bullied, because she is also chubby, wears glasses,...
