Narrator and point of view

The short story “Celia Behind Me” by Isabel Huggan is told by a first-person narrator who is also one of the main characters.

At the time when the main events in the story take place, the narrator is nine years old. However, the story is told by her adult self, recounting events from childhood, which left a big impression on her. Therefore, the account mingles the child’s memories of the events with the adult perspective on them. For instance: “And then there were the others, pulling at me, yanking me away, and in the moral tones of those who don’t actually take part, warning me that they were going to tell” (ll. 132-135). The reflection that the others behave with a false morality is the mature perspective of the adult narrator.
