Discussing Britishness, Englishness, and shifting identities

Britishness can also be discussed in comparison with Englishness. While Britishness generally refers to sympathy for the United Kingdom as a whole, Englishness refers to feeling especially connected to England and taking pride in this. The sources that discuss these concepts also look at the issue of identities evolving.

The source “Britishness and national identity” argues that “Englishness is under attack” (00:49-00:52) because of both internal conflicts and external conflicts connected to Brexit and Europe’s attitude towards the UK. The source concludes that some English people tend to identify as English rather than British because of these issues. The same source shows that ethnic minorities typically have a stronger preference for the British identity. Their choice is mostly influenced by history and politics, as Englishness has sometimes been associated with political dominance over minorities such as the Irish, Welsh, or Scots.
