Uddrag

Title

The title of John Steinbeck’s short story “Breakfast” refers, in the literal sense, to the narrator’s memory of sharing breakfast with three strangers he meets by chance. Walking down a country road one morning, the narrator comes upon a tent. A young woman is preparing breakfast, and two men of different ages come out of the tent. The elder greets the narrator and then invites him to breakfast (ll. 50-52).

The title also has several symbolic meanings. The younger man mentions they have had work for the past 12 days (l. 56), picking cotton (l. 54). He appears grateful, which implies that they previously had trouble finding work. This suggests that the people encountered by the narrator are migrant workers. Also, the younger man mentions that “ 'We been eating good for twelve days.' ” (l. 68). Therefore, the modest but plentiful breakfast they have – bacon, gravy, biscuits, and coffee (ll. 60-61) – is a symbol of the three strangers having found some security and a break from their life of hardship.
