Analysis

The analysis of the short story “Boys and Girls” by Alice Munro shows that it follows a chronological, plot structure, with the exception of one flashback. There is an internal conflict which remains unresolved.

The main character in the story is the unnamed narrator. Her personality appears to clash with her expected gender role.

The physical setting is the fictional town of Jubilee, Canada. The social setting focuses on traditional gender roles.

The story is told from the point of view of a first-person narrator. She recounts an experience from her childhood, which had an impact on her.

The language is formal. The tone is serious and reflect the narrator’s adult perspective on the events.
