Summary

In the short story “Born Again” by Anne Billson, a woman named Nancy Loughlin wakes up feeling nauseous after a night of drinking. On her way to work, she craves a Fudge Tub, a type of sweet she never had before. Nancy gets out of the cab and goes to search for a store that sells Fudge Tubs. On her way, she notices that a man with a knife is following her. When the man attacks her, Nancy is unharmed, but the man accidentally slits his throat by falling into the knife’s blade. 

At the hospital, she learns that she is pregnant. Nancy refuses to accept this, as she is a born-again virgin, and starts questioning her sanity. She makes an appointment to have an abortion at a clinic and takes a few days off work. 

While waiting for the train to take her to the clinic, Nancy feels that she is being followed. She is attacked again by a man who tries to push her onto the rails, but the man falls and is killed by the train. Nancy does not want to attract more attenti...
