Tone
Boris Johnson adopts a serious tone throughout his speech, which is appropriate for the circumstances of the speech – giving his first speech as PM – and for the topics of the speech. Johnson wants to convince the audience that he and his government will succeed in doing what the previous government was not able to do. He also wants to make clear that Britain will not be negatively affected by Brexit, despite growing concerns about this. This makes his tone sound persuasive at times.
His tone is optimistic throughout the speech, as he expresses his confidence about delivering Brexit: “ (...) we are going to fulfill the repeated promises of Parliament (…) and come out of the EU on October 31, no ifs or buts. And we will do a new deal, a better deal” (ll. 11-13). At this point, the British population was largely fed up with the three-year-deadlock concerning Brexit, which explains why Johnson needs to signal action and optimism. Another reason is that the October deadline for achieving Brexit was looming in the near future.
