Trejago
Outer characterization
Trejago is the main character, as suggested by the beginning of the narrative: “This is the story of a man who wilfully stepped beyond the safe limits of decent every-day society…” (ll. 9-10)
Trejago’s outer characterization tells readers that he is an “Englishman” (l. 57) who works in an “office” (l. 51) somewhere in colonial India and who is knowledgeable about Indian culture (ll. 11-13). Trejago’s first name is Christopher (l.120). When he goes to see Bisesa he usually goes in disguise, wearing a burka that covers him from head to feet. By the end of the story, his physical appearance changes as he gets a “a slight stiffness” (l. 194) from the wound he receives after being stabbed because of his affair with Bisesa.
