Characterization of the narrator

The narrator is one of the main characters of the short story “Beautiful Things” by Kate Vine. Although her outer appearance is not described, we can assume that she is a young woman. The narrator has been in a relationship with Tom for five years (l. 67) and wants to have children with him: “I didn’t want to have children until I met Tom; since then I’ve wanted one so badly. Something that was both me and him, yet neither of us” (ll. 81-82). 

When the narrator finds out that Tom has feelings for another woman, she feels confused and overwhelmed. However, she tries to keep calm, which is reflected by her methodical cooking (ll. 46-53). At first, she believes that Tom is going to leave her, and this makes her even more confused since she does not understand why they are still looking at houses together (ll. 61-66...
