Audience

In this part of the study guide, we will talk about the audience of Barack Obama’s remarks to the people of Israel, including the wider audience who watched his speech through different kinds of media.

Barack Obama delivered his speech at the Jerusalem International Convention Center on 21st of March, 2013, on the second day of his official visit to Israel. The audience – about 1000 people – was mostly made up of Israeli university students, journalists, and reporters. Throughout Obama’s speech, cheers and applause can be heard, which means that the audience frequently agrees with Obama’s statements. However, in a section of the speech that is not included in the official transcript, a protester from the audience shouted something, suggesting that not everyone agrees with Obama’s words. He himself acknowledges this by pointing to Israel’s culture of “lively public debate” (l. 100) and by accepting that not everyone will share his views:

I also know that not everyone in this hall will agree with what I have to say about peace. I recognize that there are those who are not simply skeptical about peace, but question its underlying premise, and that's a part of democracy and the discourse between our two countries. (ll. 275-279)
