Choice of words
In Obama’s nomination acceptance speech, the words that stand out among others are related to family, community, and unity. For instance, Obama begins his speech by referring to his parents, who believed in the American promise. Then, Obama connects this thought with the concept of a wider “American family” (p. 109, l. 7), who should come together to help the dreams of future generations come true as well.
Note that Obama also focuses on the concept of community by referring to different categories of people who, in his eyes, have helped maintain the American promise: “students and soldiers, farmers and teachers, nurses and janitors” (p. 109, ll. 11-12), “American workers” (p. 109, l. 23), “children” (p. 110, l. 34), “veterans” (p. 110, l. 34), etc.
