Analysis

An analysis of the short story “Another Community” by Rasipuram Krishnaswamy Narayan shows that the text has a chronological structure. The narrative follows the unnamed main character as he deals with rumors about tension between two communities.

The main character of the short story is an unnamed man who becomes the victim of the rivalry between two communities. The other characters mentioned in the story are more relevant for the illustration of mob mentality during a conflict.

The physical setting of the story is an unnamed town in India. Several clues suggest that the events take place at the start of the Indo-Pakistani War, which began in 1947. When it comes to the social setting, the narrative mainly focuses on the causes that lead to the mob mentality and its consequences. The story also mentions the conflict between Indians and Pakistanis.

The story is told by a first-person narrator, who addresses readers directly through the breaking of the fourth wall technique. The narrator is outside the events and follows the perspective of the main character.

The language used in the short story is neutral and easy to follow. The literary devices highlight the main character’s anxiety and fear regarding a future conflict between the two communities.
