Narrator and point of view

The short story “How Did I Get Away with Killing One of the Biggest Lawyers in the State? It Was Easy” by Alice Walker is a first-person narration, told by the main character, an African-American girl. The narration is personal and subjective, as the narrator recounts events that happened to her, almost as if the story is a confession of her crime: “When I was a little girl I used to think it was real gold, shining up there, and then they bought an eagle and put him on top…” (ll. 7-8)

The narrator already knows the resolution of the short story as the events have already happened and makes readers aware of it through the title and hints in the narrative: “He bathed a lot and never smelled even alive, to tell the truth.” (ll. 62-63)
