Characters

The most important characters in the short story “How Did I Get Away with Killing One of the Biggest Lawyers in the State? It Was Easy” by Alice Walker are the narrator, her mother (called Mama), and Bubba. In the next subpages, we will focus on each of these characters in terms of inner and outer characterization.

The unnamed girl-narrator is the protagonist of the story. Her characterization is constructed by presenting her perspective on events and characters, as well as through her actions, attitude, and motives.

“Mama” is the term the narrator uses to talk about her mother, a secondary, but important character in the short story.

Bubba is a secondary character in the story, but he is relevant for the way the narrator and her mother relate to him.

You can read our full characterization of these characters in the following subpages.
