Adam

Repetition

Adam uses repetition to highlight that America is experiencing a decline as a country and society: “ ‘America,’ he says, ‘is in deep, deep, deep trouble’ ” (p. 138, ll. 31-32). The repetition shows Adam’s strong belief that this is the case.

Adam also uses repetition to highlight his belief that the justice system is too forgiving with juvenile criminals who “ ‘go out and kill and kill again.’ ” (p. 138, l. 44). The repetition also has the purpose of making readers as angry as Adam that this is the case.

Adam also uses the word “very” repeatedly. For example: “I think it’s a very, very good learning experience and very exciting” (p. 137, ll. 9-10). This shows that Adam is an enthusiastic person. It also suggests his tendency to exaggerate.
