Summary

The short story “A Horse and Two Goats” by R. K. Narayan begins with the description of the village Kiritam, which is guarded by the statue of a horse and the statue of a warrior. Although they were majestic once, the two statues have lost their original charm and are now forgotten. At the time of the narrative, an old man named Muni is watching his two goats next to the statues. 

An American tourist stops his car nearby and admires the horse statue. The American and Muni begin talking to each other, but neither understands the other’s language. The American speaks in English, while Muni answers in Tamil.
