1. Write a short description of the history of slavery
Slavery in America began when the first African slaves were brought to the North American colony of Jamestown, Virginia, in 1619. At first the slaves could regain their freedom and earn land in exchange for seven years of hard labor. On July 9, 1640, when three runaway indentured servants were captured, the General Court of Colonial Virginia sentenced John Punch, a black man, to servitude for life, while the two other servants were white and they were just given a few extra years of labor. John Punch was the first African in Virginia to be enslaved for life.

In 1641, Massachusetts became the first North American colony to recognize slavery as a legal institution. As slavery was starting to become legal, it was also starting to become more accepted. The African slaves were treated worse, many were enslaved for life, and the rights of the slaves became even harsher. Slavery became a matter of legacy in 1663, where the Virginia court decided, that if the mother of a child was enslaved, then the child would also become a slave.
