Uddrag

B1.
The short story “Burying Your Life” written by Harkiran Dhindsa and published in 2010 is about a family that is falling apart. The married couple Rahul and Sarah is preparing the funeral of their son Tom's beloved cat George in the backyard of their home in London. While Rahul is having trouble digging a hole that is big enough, the couple is trying hard not to argue, but it is clear that tension is in the air. Sarah has decided to leave for Yorkshire together with Tom to seek out her past life romance, Chris, who she met again recently. Although she swears not to have slept with him, she is ready to leave behind her husband and their mutual home. In the hope that Sarah might change her mind, Rahul tries to get her to stay for a few more days on pretext of not wanting the cat's funeral to be Tom's last memory of his childhood home.

B2.
The short story is told from a third person narrator and from the main character Rahul's point of view. Rahul is of Indian descent and has been married to Sarah for nine years. Together they have a son named Tom. A month ago, his wife broke the news to him that she had met a man named Chris who she knew when she was 18 years old. She has decided to leave London to go back to Yorkshire where she grew up. Rahul is obviously not happy with Sarah's decision and doesn't want to break up the family. He still loves his wife even though he tries to focus on the negative sides of her in order to dull his pain: “Perhaps it's better to see that – to remember the cracked skin of her heel rather than the shine in her blue eyes” (ll. 31-32).
Even though Rahul is hurt, he hasn't reacted strongly to the situation or lost his temper. He seems a rather guarded man who keeps his emotions to himself: “Even when she delivered her confession that Friday evening, he barely raised his voice.
