Novel reading – Rabbit Proof Fence
Rabbit Proof Fence is a novel written by the author Doris Pilkington (Nugi Garimara, her aboriginal name) and published in 2002. There was an earlier version called Follow the Rabbit Proof Fence published in 1996. It is now made into a movie from Miramax films, directed by Philip Noyce and starring Kenneth Branagh. This movie we watched last year. I was inspired to see the book when I saw that a friend of mine had it lying around.
This novel is about three half cast girls (Molly, Daisy and Gracie). They are members of the Jigalong tribe in Western Australia. In 1931 they are removed from their family and placed in an educational institution at the Moore River. The real plot of the story is when these three girls escape this institution and walking more than 2000 kilometres alongside the rabbit proof fence to get back home. This gets even harder since they are being followed by the people from Moore River. Two of the girls make it all the way back home. Gracie is not that lucky. She gets caught by the institution guys.
The story is based on a true story. Actually Molly is the mother of the author who found it interesting to tell her mother's story.
