Far and Away is an old-fashioned adventure-drama-romance, which takes place in the 1800s and starts out in Ireland. It is about immigrants leaving their own country to go to America, The land of opportunities, in search of freedom and land. And what drives them is either poverty, religious or racial persecution or simply the wish to find something better over there – something worth fighting for.

The young Irish farmer, Joseph Donnelly, is living a life in poverty, and at the time, in the 1800s, there was a big gap between the rich and the poor. Donnelly's landlord, who is very wealthy, is causing anything but harmony for the poor family and after the death of Joseph's father he decides to take revenge on his landlord, Daniel Christie. In the meantime, Daniel's daughter, Shannon, desperately wants to escape her wealthy Irish lifestyle, because she has grown dissatisfied with the traditional views of her parents' generation.
