1. Give a brief summary of the play (max. 150 words)
The play is about Ken Harrison who has been paralyzed from the neck and down. He used to be a sculptor and now he can't do anything else than think and talk. He is going to be hospitalized for the rest of his life and won't gain any power of his arms or legs. Therefore he wishes to die. He gets a lawyer and sues the hospital so he can be released from the hospital and die. In the end of the story a judge demands him released.
2. Characterize Ken. Find examples in the text to support your view.
He has a lot of self-irony as pictured in the text: “I'm afraid I can't offer you my hand…”. Though he is also very depressed because of his situation: “From where I'm lying if you can make it at all- even with your right hand…” And last he thinks a lot about sex, which is pictured very well in the text: “Have me on the floor sister, have me on the floor”.
3. Compare the two doctors: Dr. Emerson and Dr. Scott.
