Analysis

This section highlights the main elements of our analysis of the story “Fusilli” by Graham Swift.

The story’s plot structure is not linear, as the narration continuously shifts from past to present. The story presents the struggle of a father who tries to accept the death of his son who has been killed in the Afghanistan War.

The main character of the story is an unnamed father. His wife Jenny and his son Doug are secondary characters, who are only indirectly present in the story.

The main events take place in a supermarket in the United Kingdom. The social setting explores the issues of war,  consumerist society, and the expectations society puts on people of different genders.

The events are described by a limited third-person narrator, who is focused on the father's point of view.

The story is told in a descriptive style, which includes symbolism. The style of writing is informal and the language often appears fragmented.
