The Insurance Money

Very early in the first act, it is established that the focal point of the play is a check of insurance money. After the death of Big Walter, Mama’s husband and the father of Walter and Beneatha, the family is waiting for his insurance money to arrive. A check of about 10,000 dollars is to arrive on Saturday and everyone is talking about it. They all have their dreams and ideas about how to spend the money. While Mama plans to spend some of the money on buying a small house and others on getting Beneatha through medical school, Walter wants to start up a liquor store with two of his friends, Bobo and Willy Harris. There is clearly a conflict of interest already early in the play.

In the middle of these financial worries, it turns out that Ruth is pregnant and that the romantic relationship between her and Walter is seriously challenged.
