The disjointed and fragmented language that is used towards the end of the novel reflects Patrick’s profound psychological disturbance. As the story progresses, his mental state deteriorates, and his grip on reality becomes more and more tenuous. Entire paragraphs and even chapters begin mid-sentence and jump from one topic to the next with little to no logical transition. The fragmented language mirrors Patrick’s fractured psyche, making the reader question what is real and what is a product of his delusions.

Symbols and motifs

Hell and the devil are recurring motifs that serve to underscore Patrick’s moral and psychological descent as well as the dark and depraved nature of the society in which he lives. The novel begins with a quote from Dante’s Inferno, which Dante sees upon entering the gates of Hell. In this way, the novel suggests that Patrick’s world – which readers are about to enter – is Hell. Patrick also identifies with the devil multiple times throughout the novel, such as when he believes he is receiving a message from the lead singer of the band U2: “I am the devil and I am just like you” (Ch 19 Concert, 82%) or when he believes he hears his brother call him “Damian” (Ch 29 Birthday, brothers, 100%), which is a name associated with the devil.
