Summary
The first person narrator, Sumita, tells the story of her arranged marriage. Her friends tell her that she is lucky to get married to a man who lives in America, but Sumita is worried because she has met the man she is going to marry. She has to dress in a new expensive sari for the bride-viewing. At the bride-viewing she will meet her new husband and his family for the very first time, and they will choose whether she is a suitable wife or not. When she sees the sari, her father has brought, she knows that they are going to accept her.
Sumita moves to America to live with her husband Somesh Sen and his parents. She slowly starts falling in love with her husband. Somesh's parents are very conservative and live an almost Indian life in America and want Sumita and Somesh to do the same. Somesh and Sumita therefore hide the fact that she secretly dresses like an American woman. Sumita is still torn between the Indian culture and the American lifestyle, but she looks forward to moving into a bigger apartment with her husband and to begin work in the 7- eleven Somesh partly owns.
